The Charles Henry Hattersley and Michael J. Platt collections
At Sheffield we have been fortunate in inheriting a collection of books assembled by Charles Henry Hattersley – a well-known local ringer who was active up until around the time of WWI. These included 19th century classics such as Hubbard’s Elements of Campanalogia, Shipway’s Campanalogia/Art of Ringing, Bannister’s Art and Science of Change-Ringing, Thackrah’s Art of Ringing, plus Clavis Campanalogia – published 1788.
More contemporary publications have been added over the years by subsequent tower librarians, including Mike Platt who held the role for several years until his retirement to Uttoxeter, and was himself an avid collector of ringing books. Sadly his retirement was all too brief and he died in 2017.
We were surprised and pleased to hear that Mike had bequeathed his considerable collection of books and papers connected with church bells and bellringing to Sheffield Cathedral ‘for the use of the Cathedral Bellringers’. The receipt of Mike’s bequest has made the Cathedral Library into what must now be one of the more comprehensive collections of ringing books held. Of particular note is the possibly complete collection of ‘Church Bells of … (the various counties) of England, Wales and Scotland’.
